I Have Two Shoulders

I am back from vacation and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The new hat held up nicely, even after it was blown into the ocean, soaked, and then run through the washer and dryer. It held up fine.

However, sometime around Tuesday, I seem to have forgotten that I have two shoulders. I sun burned my left shoulder because I completely missed it with the sunscreen. I have no idea how this happened. I have always had two shoulders. That shoulder has been mine since the beginning and I have no good reason for forgetting it. Yet I did.

The body part I used to miss putting sunscreen on had been the tops of my feet. I got them sun burned on an annual basis for several years before I finally learned. But I never missed a whole shoulder before.

My theory is that I missed the shoulder because I switched back to using lotion sunscreen rather than the continuous spray kind I used last year. I had bought a bottle of BullFrog before I left and it was available as a lotion and not as the spray. It is the brand I prefer because it seems to stay on the longest and is very water resistant. I am now convinced that the continuous spray sunscreens go on more evenly than the kind you slather on. (This is a study based on one person and it thus makes for a lousy statistical case. In medicine, this is called an anecdote.)

The other thing I learned on vacation is that parents are putting their littler kids into bathing suits with sleeves. At first, I thought they had just thrown a shirt on the kid over their suit, and commented that some shirts (especially white T-shirts) don’t block enough sunlight to be effective. (Yeah, I am a nag.) But I was told that some bathing suits for small kids (up to age 6 or so, I gather) now come with short sleeves, elbow length sleeves or even long sleeves. Once I found out how hard it was to corral my nieces and nephews so that we could spray their wriggling bodies with sunscreen every couple of hours, I thought sleeves on bathing suits was a great idea.

How often do you forget to put sunscreen on an exposed body part? Or is it just me?

My Hat and I Head for the Beach

I am about to go on vacation. I will be spending a week lying on a beach on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, surrounded by family members. I can’t wait. This is the third year in a row that we have had a family reunion in North Carolina, with my brothers and sister and their kids and their kids’ kids coming in from four states. The past two years, it was 10 adults and 5 kids, all in one large house. This year, it will be 13 adults and 5 kids, all in one house. No one in my family is a bad cook and we take turns making dinner. We decided the first year that we did this that if nothing we did made the national news the vacation would be considered a success. I have a large, loving, loud, and rowdy extended family. Our family reunions have registered on the Richter scale in the past.

I Have Internet!!!!!!!!!

mouse_dropshadow.jpgEveryone take a moment to be thankful that they have Internet and cell coverage from their homes.  Seriously.   It has taken me forever to get Internet at the new house.  I had DSL in the seller’s name when I moved in.  The seller’s tried to switch it to my name [and Verizon said they could] but Verizon in the end did not.  Well, I tried desperately to get it back knowing that someone was probably waiting in line for it.  Well, they were—and they got it because I had one appointment after the other canceled on me by Verizon (without telling me, mind you!!) because “ma’am, you’re too far from the main office to get DSL”  Even though I had it when I moved in, albeit very briefly.  Apparently there was a capacity for about 12 lines on the hill and I had one of them.
