My Favorite Beauty Reads: Blogs, Magazines, and Books--OH MY!
It can be so very difficult getting true, unbiased info regarding beauty products these days. The Internet-thorn-in-my-side happens to be those portal sites that “review” products that only highlight those which link to a place to buy them. Sometimes the only place to buy these products happens to be your corner pharmacy, or perhaps a doctor’s office. When it comes to getting my monthly dose of beauty gossip and general beauty trend reports, a few favorites come to mind. And in no particular order!
- http://www.beautyblognetwork.com/ A beauty blog mecca! BBN is a pretty big network of all things fabulous!
- http://blondeadvice.com/ I love this blog! These ladies crack me up. The advice isn’t always beauty-related but it is entertaining and candid.
- http://jackandhill.typepad.com/ This is a favorite of mine.
- http://totalbeauty.byouneek.com/ Total Beauty Tips has a good amount of useful information. Can be pretty basic at times, but we all need a refresher in beauty basics once in a while.
- www. blog . makeup moxie.com/ This one is a pretty good read. I read it pretty regularly and walk away with very useful information.
- http://www.allaboutthepretty.typepad.com/ This is a great blog! I love her attitude and sense of humor!
Although I haven’t been buying much print media, I do have a favorite standby. Marie Claire is a good one I like to delve into at the salon. Great product reviews and good trend reports. Plus, their articles on plastic surgery are usually spot-on without being biased. I can always catch up the latest and greatest when reading MC.
If you are in the mood for a lengthier read, one of the best books I have ever read would be Survival of the Prettiest by Nancy Etcoff. Etcoff gets down to the nitty-gritty of why we are attracted to what we find sexy, or desirable in a mate—either long term, or just looking for a “donor” a la Praying Mantis style. We are animals after all. She focuses on why we are programmed to act on certain behaviors. I would definitely check it out, just be prepared to become a little irritated when faced with the truth. We can hate it all we want but some aspects of human behavior makes me want to let out a scream and man hate for a week, hehe.
If you have any good suggestions, please feel free to post them. I am always on the lookout for the newest, fresh info out there. So, please, if you have any recommendations, post ‘em!

MissJ - I cannot believe I left that one out, I love that blog! Thanks for the add :)
I work with a Sacramento plastic surgery practice and in my job I try to stay up to date on the latest info on cosmetic procedures and beauty tips. Though guys aren't a huge portion of the cosmetic audience, I still find that they get almost no airtime in terms of articles and features tailored just to them. One good resource I found is www.guysguidetoplasticsurgery.com. The news section there has some interesting articles. Anyone else know of a good resource tailored to men considering their cosmetic options?
