Is Your Body "Beach Ready"?

For many coastal areas, beach season is already in full swing. However, we still have quite a bit of bikini weather left. For those of you past your twenties and a fondness for pasta (like me!) looking your body-best may be a challenge. Granted, you need a good three months to achieve a real body turnaround, but there are a few tricks to looking your best—fast.
Losing the Winter-Weight
I tend to lose accumulated fat by eating a diet rich in fish and vegetables. I don’t particularly like tuna fish; it works but it makes me cringe. If you can handle it, go for it. It is a good way to get your protein without a lot of fat. Just be sure you are not eating too many foods high in mercury, especially if you are trying to conceive or are pregnant. Grilled salmon, vegetables, and salads are a great way to slim down and get healthy.
Although some people may not agree, I find that food combining (such as Somersizng) gets rid of my extra fat pretty quickly. Perform a Google search for Somersizing basics and try it if you are curious. I actually lost 10 lb in 2 ½ weeks paired with light walking. I do so well with starches and high glycemic foods so eliminating them made a huge difference.
Drink plenty of water! It obviously keeps you hydrated and your body healthy. Your skin is more plump, your water retention levels out, and then some. I just started drinking more water and I notice that my skin looks better, my lips look fuller, my skin looks less dry. Who knew all these years of being harassed about my water intake would really make a difference? ;)
Toning Up
Not that I feel I can develop major tone in a matter of days, I do know that I have toned up in the last few months simply by working around my place. Working out in the yard, riding horses, hiking, it all helps. Get outside and stay active! You don’t have to walk in front of a flat-screen on the wall at your local gym like a rat in a cage with its eyes glued to CNN to get your cardio in. Run-on sentences, sure, but you get my point. Do something that you enjoy and you will most likely adhere to the regimen. When boredom sets in we snack, we falter, we plop on the couch and watch TV. Anything to ease the boredom of exercise.
Cardio is important, as is light weight lifting to increase muscle tone. The more muscle you gain, the higher your metabolism, the better you look, and so on. It’s no accident that burning more calories than you take in assists in fat loss. Plus it keeps you healthy!
Smoke and Mirrors
When all else fails, resort to “magic”.
- Tan fat looks better than white fat. Slather on a bottle tan, get a Mystic Tan, do whatever it takes to change your beacon-in-the-night body to a golden (fake) goddess of a tan. You will look slimmer, more tone and your cellulite will show less. Trust me!
- Wear a bathing suit that flatters YOUR figure. Research the best suit types which flatter your curves, your shortcomings, or your seconds helpings. There is a suit out there for everyone.
- Fake it ‘til you make it. If you still feel less than your best, don a sarong. I don’t walk down the beach or around a pool without one. No one need be accosted by my thighs during their beach picnic lunch. I am too polite (and too self conscious) for that. A cute, black sarong does just fine for me.
- Sundresses are perfectly acceptable for those of us who chose not to don a bathing suit at all. Even more, I usually wear capris and a tank. I just don’t like being in a bathing suit to tell you the truth. Wear what you are comfortable with, there is no need to feel self conscious simply because everyone else is wearing a bikini.
Plastic Surgery
Obviously you cannot expect to research, choose a doc, consult, schedule, have the surgery, then recover in under a month. This process takes time. Summer is when we usually long to have surgery, but the truth is having surgery in the winter seems like a more sensible option to me. When it is warm and sunny out, we tend to want to get up and go, travel, be active! Things that you can’t really do when you have bandages and tubes hanging off of you. The swelling is also an issue many people do not think about. Hence it is best to put off any planned surgeries until later if you wish to indulge in summer activities. Unless, of course, you adhere to a strict take-it-easy rule. Don’t compromise your results. I, myself, decided to hold off on the ole implants until possibly as late as October or November.
Whatever you do, remember to have FUN this summer. That is the most important aspect, not worrying about your thighs. Life is too short to worry so much that you never want to leave the house. Smile :) Life is beautiful.

Great advice re: having plastic surgery in winter to be fully prepared to show off your body come summer time. I work with a group of surgeons who perform plastic surgery in Sacramento, and though we tend to see a lot of interest in body contouring procedures during the spring months, for more extensive surgery the recovery period will take up a good portion of the summer, in some cases meaning a patient isn't really ready to show off their new look until the following year. A little bit of planning goes a long way toward having your body "beach ready" at just the right time.
