Long Eyelashes: Fake Eyelashes & Permanent Eyelashes
I have “acceptable” eyelashes, not too sparse, not too short. But as we all know, the enemy of good is better. I wish they were longer, thicker and darker. So! I have tried a few methods of improving their appearance, but there are a few methods I still need to look into. I love long eyelashes. I wish I had sexy, black butterfly wings for lashes!
- Eyelash Treatments & Conditioners: I was so skeptical about the Jan Marini Eyelash Conditioner. Until I tried it and used it for a few weeks. It REALLY does work. But its effects are not permanent, you have to keep using it to benefit through each growth cycle. My lashes did get longer and thicker. You should try it!
- Temporary Eyelash Dyeing: I could have sworn Philosophy made an eyelash tint that seems to last a few days. I can’t find my tube anymore and a Google search produced nothing. Although it seemed to stick my lashes together. Not so much clumping but more like when they are wet.
- Permanent Eyelash Dyeing: I decided to try this today for the article. You can totally do this yourself. I used 1000 Hour Eyelash & Brow Dye Kit in Blue-Black ($23.00) after a suggestion right here on the blog! (Thank you!) I didn’t notice too much color, but my lashes are dark already. If you get it, you do not have to squeeze out an inch of color from the tube like the directions say; you can use just a 1/4”. Adjust the drops accordingly. The pic above is from dyeing my lashes this morning. It’s a bad pic with even worse lighting. I took it in my bathroom with my iPhone.
- False Eyelashes (individuals and full sets): I have used full sets for photo shoots and for going out with the girls. I like them but they are very Vegasy. I live in the country now; they’ll think me a tart! They are fun to try though. Just don’t pull them off. I would rather use the individuals which are actually sets of two/three lashes that you apply to your own lashes with glue). But I usually only apply about 3 on the outer ends of my lids. I think it is sexy and believable.
- Eyelash Extensions: I have not tried extensions but I am considering it! These are essentially like the individuals you apply yourself but these are truly [usually] single lashes applied to each eyelash. They usually stay put until your lash falls out, depending upon where it is in its growth cycle (60-90 days, or you just caught one on the end, you might lose it in a week unfortunately). And just like hair extensions, maintenance is required. It is usually advised to have “fills” every 2 - 4 weeks or so depending upon how you take care of them and what your growth cycle is doing. You can wear mascara on your own lashes but you really don’t have to. You know what, I need to just break down and go do it. I’ll make an appointment and report back!
- Eyelash Transplants: I would do this if I had to, but thankfully I do not. You can have hairs transplanted from the nape of your neck to your lids. They do fall out but they regrow within the next 1-2 growth cycles. The downside is that you have to trim and curl them (or have them permed) to make them look more natural. I feel they should use nose hairs for both eyelash and eyebrow transplants.—NOT head hair.
- Permanent Make-up: I have had my lash line tattooed to give the illusion of a thicker lash line. It is subtle but it works. It resembles more of a thin line of eyeliner but it does accentuate the lashes.
Do you have any tips on how to make your lashes look thicker and more luxurious? I would love to hear from you!

I don't see a huge difference in the main part of my lashes in color with the 1000hr dye, but the tips that tend to be blondish and very fine are blackened and therefore my lashes appear longer. My bottom lashes go from light and almost unnoticeable to black with that.
I read about a lash conditioner in US Weekly or Star a few months ago. They compared 3, including RevitaLash, different kinds, and one that they liked the best was only $20. RevitaLash and Jan Marini are each well over $100, so I'm trying to find the cheaper one. Does anyone know of other, less expensive options??
Ms. M:
I have had the eyelash ext. and found them to look good and fall out very fast. I mourned each little lash (about 3 on my pillow every morning) The X-Treme Lash (from the great state of Texas) is by far the most reliable company but it gets EXTREMELY expensive in a hurry - appx 400 for the first set and 150 every two weeks or so.
I have also consulted a hair loss specialist about the eyelash transplant and he suggested Revitalash. I took it a step further and had my GP write an off label scrip for Lumagin (for glaucoma that has the side effect of growing lashes and is the active ingredient of the Revitalash, et al. So far, I am experiencing very dark circles under my eyes that are also a side effect of the medication and I see noticeable dark patches at the lash line where thicker lashes seem anxious to see daylight. I was told that there is appx a 10 week cycle to see the new lashes so I have 8 weeks more. Will update when I know more - in the meantime - this is interesting reading
