No Hair For My Hairbrush

nohair.jpgNo hair for my hairbrush, no hair, no hair, no where, no hair…

Well, ladies, it is official.  I am bald.  Okay, not bald but pretty near.  You may remember how excited I was about my last set of hair extensions..  So the recent update is that I took them out two days ago while sitting in my sink with a bag of cotton balls, a bottle of acetone and a fine tooth comb.  Now it’s all about the waiting game of growing it out…

Okay, so WHY did I do this?  Because my hair wasn’t getting any longer.  As you know, I lighten my hair so monofilament extensions and weakened hair, plus (if you ask me) a horrible disregard for my own hair during take down sessions, has literally broken my hair off.  My hair is a very thin and scraggly mess with sections of it only extending to the base of my neck.  That’s it.

I keep it in a small scrunchie (the regular sized ones fall out) and call it a day. When it’s up in a scrunchie (as it is right now), the ball is about the size of a mini-muffin including the mini-scrunchie.  Horrors!!

I have thought about getting the 21”  Light Golden Blonde HairDo™ Clip in Hair Extensions System created by Jessica Simpson and stylist, Ken Paves.  That was until I realized that it was not $425, for a set of clip-ins, but rather $425. FOR EACH WEFT.  Are they insane??  I have bought my own hair, synthetic and human, and made my own clip-in wefts before.  They are not that difficult to make.  The quality of the end product is entirely dependent upon the quality of the hair and how you care for them. But $425 for a single weft.? Granted it’s a multi-level piece, partial wig cap, but that price is psychotic in my opinion.  You will need smaller pieces to help blend it all in at the sides and what not—or you will look like you have a Jessica-Mullet.  Now, do you really want a Jessica-Mullet?

So, I guess I am either I’m going to make my own or buy some cheaper clip-in ones.  But, get this my hair is too thin to cover them right now anyway.  So if I do clip anything in, it will be just to enhance the scrunchied hair to give it a fuller appearance while it’s up.  What’s the point??

What’s worse, hair grows on average about 1/2 an inch a month.  Coupled with the fact I will need regular trims more than the average person to keep it looking less scraggly until it fills in.  I will never have hair again!!  It will take a thousand years.  What’s sad, is this is my real hair before extensions:

This is my hair right this second while I am sitting at Starbuck’s working.    (I supposedly really get Internet at my house tomorrow, but I have heard this for months.)   That’s with all of it pushed to one side, and that’s my good side.  What a difference!!!!!

Moral of the story?  Don’t get any extensions if you don’t need them.  Also, take down is key.  Make sure they aren’t ripping your extensions from your natural hair.  Go for the shrinky Links or tie-in mini-braid method.  I feel they are the least damaging when it comes to take-down.

Okay, I am off to cry…

Marianne, I feel your pain! I have very thin, fine hair and once I took my extensions out, it was just ridiculous. I would love to get them again, but between the cost for upkeep and the damage, it's just not worth it.
For what it's worth, you still look gorgeous!

Hi Marianne--

I had thyroid checked and although I am in the "normal" range (you know the docs and labs consider normal to be not the extremes), my doctor prescribed thyroid medication. He has been increasing the dose also. I am taking "Armour" which has both T4 and T3 thyroid hormones, instead of just providing T4. This medication takes a number of months to work but I have noticed some more hair. Not a lot, but maybe it is helping thickening and giving me more hair. Here's a link for more info.

Marianne, even if you were bald you would be prettier than 99.9% of the population, but I know how sad you must be with the damage to your own hair. I will pray that it grows quickly and that it is healthy in the process.

Oh, what a drag M . Have you tried Jan Marini age intervention hair conditioner? If it works like the eyelash conditioner, that could be a great solution. I get half a head of extensions which only kills half your hair...lol. There's always the Posh hair bob ? or not....:)

are you all alone out there in the wilderness????

it's not bad

you're used to more than the usual amount of hair on your head

you're starting out with a ton more than me

it will grow

faster than you think

I think you look gorgeous with it the way it is naturally/no extensions

a shoulder length cut, a few trims and it'll be down your back before you know it

Marianne --

The photo doesn't look that bad. I was expecting way worse from your description. I second the idea of getting your thyroid checked, but I wouldn't take any thyroid meds unless you are on the low side. Messing with hormones is always a little tricky. I'm hypothyroid and take levoxyl, myself.

However, have you considered a blunt cut? That can make your hair look a lot thicker and with that great blonde color it could look fabulous. (Frankly, they could drag you through a bush backwards and you would still come out looking good, kiddo.)

HI everyone! Thank you for the responses! I have had my thyroid checked and it is normal. About 7 years ago it was only slightly hypo but it is fine now. My mother's is hypo, as is my uncle's. I am not having problems growing hair itself, andIhave no actual loss at the scalp, just breakage from the extensions and bleach.

The hair that grows out is healthy, I just want to super-grow it lol! My hair has always been fine and thin though.

I need to try the Jan Marini, I love the eyelash treatment, I am sure I will love the conditioner! Thanks for the tip.

Halo, I have only had the half head for a while so thank God it only destroyed everything from the ears down and not the top. I am glad they are out to tell you the truth. My natural hair knots a lot easier than the extension hair though. Especially since there area lot of little, new growth and broken, hairs near the scalp. It is so much thicker at the scalp.

LOL Valerie about the bush-drag ;) Thank you! :) I am glad to hear you are feeling better and all worked out for you. We were all waiting for an update :)

Have a happy Thursday! I finally have Internet as of last night so I am thrilled myself!

Everyone thinks Brit was crazy for shaving her head...unless they have had extensions. I have more then once asked to just have it just shaved off (but chicken out, more extensions, more dye PLEASE!) But seriously M, you are stunning woman, long hair or not. I think you would look fabulous with the new hair cut Shanna Moalker has. "NO--my shirt doesn't have a lace back, that's my hair" (as spoken to my sister, post extension removal, circa 2002).

I am getting used to it. I know I need to dye the roots and cut off a lot of the stragglies but it will do for now. I just put it in a short ponytail and call it a day.

It will be okay :(
