Which Breast Implants Are The Best Choice

myimplant.jpgFirstly, I am not saying that I am the all-knowing, all-seeing breast implant guru. I never will be, I don’t want to be, because there is simply no such thing.  Yes, one can know breast implants up, down, and sideways—but that doesn’t mean what they say is gospel as it pertains to YOU.  You can know and understand basic scientifc facts and figures—as well as statistics—but when it comes to your body, only you can determine what you prefer.  Unfortunately, not many of you will be able to realistically compare each implant type without having multiple surgeries, and why would you do that?

Many surgeons prefer silicone breast implants.  I, however, do not.  Granted, I have never had silicone breast implants.  I have only ever had saline implants, and only two sets (McGhan moderate profiles and also their high profile implants).  Out of those two, I prefer the high profiles.  Interestingly, my last surgeon who explanted me felt that the high profiles were not large enough for my base, although the moderate profiles were thought to be too large for my base from the surgeon who replaced them with high profiles.  So you see, all surgeons are going to have different ideas of what looks best, but only you are going to be able to determine what feels best to your liking while they’re inside of you.  No amount of copping a feel of either the demo implants or the receptionist’s in your doctor’s office is going to truly let you know what to expect.

Not all of us are going to agree on what looks good, or feels best.  Not to mention your own pre-existing breast tissue is going to add a siginifcant difference to each case.  You may like natural feeling breasts, or you may like firmer after-market parts. I have to admit I prefer the firmness of optimally-filled saline implants over silicone gels.  I feel the gummi bear breast implants feel great as well.  My surgeon does not prefer the gummi implants because of its anatomical shape.  He feels that the chance of the implant rotating outweighs its other benefits.  Others disagree, who is right?  I prefer round implants over anatomicals, but that’s just me.

Obviously what is available today is far more superior than their predecessors.  Based upon product quality alone much less a broader availability of options, I’d say we have it made nowadays.  The more options, the merrier, but it can make choosing far more difficult.  It’s like going to the Cheesecake Factory and not being able to make an entree decision because you are faced with too many choices.  The reality is, you are commonly going to be swayed by your surgeon’s preferences, or your friends’ experiences.  Only after you have your own inside of you and you are well healed can you judge a situation.

So which brand?  McGhan?  Mentor? Silimed?  Who?? I prefer McGhan, but only because of personal experience and because I once knew an engineer for Mentor who let me in on a few supposed secrets. I have also had better experiences with the reps for McGhan.  But, this doesn’t have anything to do with wear.  As I have said, I only have had McGhan implants. It’s kind of like being either a Ford or a Chevy girl.  I’m just not willing to test drive the ‘Chevy’ just to say I’ve driven it.  Although, personally I am a Mercedes AMG chick, but whatever. And to tell you the truth, I’d prefer an Aston Martin Vanquish over them all, but who can afford that??  But I digress.

My next implant set?  More than likely McGhan saline’s because of the rupture factor.  It is no secret that I play hard.  Between snowboarding and skydiving, I have done my fair share of potential boob damage.  I once landed square on my right breast implant when I was skiboarding—and this was only a few months after getting them!  If they rupture, what a mess.  I don’t need the local complications, I really do not. If a salty ruptures, great.  I become hydrated, no biggie.  If a sili ruptures, we’re in trouble.

The choice is yours, although if your surgeon is vehemently opposed to certain implant that you prefer, you’re usually out of luck. Just be sure to do your research and obtain cold, hard facts before choosing a few options.  Then discuss these options with your surgeon and hear him/her out.  They may change your mind, or they may not.  Mine did not.  He pushed silicone on me for my redo but I have no desire.

Just remember, they are ultimately your breasts, don’t think you need to go with a certain option because your friend did, or your doctor is pro one or the other.  They are your boobs, and this is your boobj ob.  Don’t rush into it. :)

I included a pic (above) of my high profile implant when I first had it out.  It now sits on my desk, but  most of the water has evaporated out of it since this photo was taken  Here is a new pic taken 9 months later (below).  See?  The implant is semi-permeable.

Hi Marianne

This is probably a stupid question but I do have breast implants and so they are 360 CC but I think the doctor said fill them up to 420 CC's so I am not sure how big mine are!! Isn't this so dumb that I don't even know how big mine are? My bra size is pretty much 34 DD I am just confused!!

It should be in your patient file how many cc you eventually were filled to :) Have you ever properly sized yourself for a bra? Don't ya hate when you are inbetween sizes??

About which implants are best...I agree, it's entirely up to the patient. I don't have implants myself, so I don't have firsthand experience. But I've studied them quite a bit and today's silicone gel implants rarely rupture and if they do, the filling doesn't normally leak out of the breast pocket.

I know something about implants because I work for a plastic surgeon who uses both saline and silicone. If I were going to get breast augmentation in the Detroit area I would go to someone like him who offers comparisons and helps you choose.
